It’s been an emotional experience for all of us. We watched them all, and you blew us away over and over again. We feel like we know you better and perhaps even gained insight into how our music makes you feel.
You’re probably tired of hearing us say this BUT: it was not easy to select the winners. Each band member had different videos they were moved by, subject matter that really spoke to them, and favorite videos they were rooting for. Our list is essentially what we all agreed on. We picked some for quality and technical skill, and some purely on subject matter or overall feel, even if the video wasn’t perfect. We also took into account who we (think we) are and how the video would fit with our style… or perhaps how it might even fit with our future directions… all the while trying to expand our ideas of what a music video -could- be. The contest was so interesting, but we forgot we’d have to choose…and that makes us a bit uncomfortable.

We could go through one by one and pick out the things we liked in each… but it’s a 9 hour viewing session! So many of these were clearly worked on with so much dedication. We can’t thank you enough.

Announcing your #TBMVideoContest FINALISTS !! (*corrected) Please share and retweet. For the last 2 months, we’ve been watching along with the rest of you, discussing favourites and finalists (as well as some of the weirder things we saw). There’s around 160 videos in over 9 hours and nearly 10 gigs of data.
Now it’s time. This past weekend and had a screening where we discussed what we liked and why. It was a long, caffeine-fuelled, blast of sight and sound, …followed by a Thai food cool-down once we had selected the list. We don’t quite agree on everything, but we’re able to narrow it down. The 13 winners will be announced on April 9th, 2013. We have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place to choose, plus 10 follow-up prizes (and some “honourable mentions) as detailed in the rules here: https://www.facebook.com/TheBirthdayMassacre/posts/10151384785044039

Choosing, as Chibi mentioned, is difficult. Too many are just great in all sorts of ways. Too many, even ones that aren’t the highest of quality, have little things about them we love. Some blew us away by the art and effort, but we felt they didn’t fit the contest as well as others. However, it wouldn’t be much of a contest if we didn’t pare it down somehow, right? Thanks to everyone who entered …on this list, or otherwise.

The process is a bit subjective of course, and it’s sometimes hard for us to pinpoint exactly what it is about a video that we dig… apologies if we didn’t pick your favourite. Go easy on us in the comments!
